Vladimir Putin: "We do have such weapons".

Everybody instantly started talking about an arms race and the scary Russian missile. In reality, it is Russia that feels in danger and wants to restore nuclear parity.

How does it work? And what did Putin mean by: "Nobody listened to us. Listen up now".

Let's find out. Nuclear parity is the result of an arms race. It was provoked by the first and only nuclear strikes. The US dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Today, the total number of victims exceeds 450,000. By 1949, the USSR had developed its own nuclear bomb. In 1952, the US tested the first hydrogen bomb. The USSR did the same a year later.

Both sides started to develop ballistic missiles, trying to outrun each other. The US positioned their nuclear arms in Turkey. And the USSR positioned its arms in Cuba. The result was the Cuban Missile Crisis where both sides were on the brink of nuclear war. Moscow and Washington realized that there could be no winner in this war. The detente started.

By the 1990s, it seemed that the competition between Moscow and Washington was over. It was the time of false promises. NATO made its famous promise to the USSR leader Mikhail Gorbachev: "Not one inch eastward".

Mikhail Gorbachev: "Secretary of State Baker used to say that NATO wouldn't expand even 10 centimeters eastward".

The recently declassified papers dating back to the negotiations of 1990 are proof of that.

James Baker, Secretary of State: "If the US maintains its presence in Germany as a part of NATO, then NATO would not expand to the east".

Warren Christopher, Secretary of State: "We won't allow any expansion to the detriment of others".

In 1994, the US changed its mind about expanding eastward.

Bill Clinton: "We want to expand but I'll never use that against you".

However, during the next 18 years Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia Albania, Croatia Montenegro as well as the former Soviet republics Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia joined the NATO. Just like that, the NATO came close to Russia.

Here's a meme from the Internet about Russia moving too close to the NATO bases.

Their anti-missile systems also came close to Russia. Another promise that the US failed to fulfill. In 2002, the US terminated the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty that was signed by the USSR.

What's missile defense? It's something that lets a country launch missiles, and intercept the counterstrike, guaranteeing its victory in a possible war. Of course, the NATO and the US claim that their missile systems aren't targeting Russia, but rather offer protection against Iran and North Korea. But the map makes us doubt that. The systems were positioned in Poland, Romania California, and Alaska. NATO plans to position them in Japan and South Korea. Missile cruisers patrol the seas and oceans close to the Russian border.

Vladimir Putin: "The elements of their anti-missile system worry us quite a bit. We've been addressing the topic for the past 10 years. It destroys the strategic balance of the world".

The balance is broken. Russia, which, unlike the US, doesn't build up its anti-missile systems is in grave danger.

Vladimir Putin: "You understand what we're talking about, why do you remain silent? All of you remain silent. The situation escalates and propels the arms race. Creates a new round. It's plainly obvious. We're constantly working on our response developing systems capable of countering the missile defense. It is the new round of the arms race".

Russia was forced to invent a weapon capable of countering the missile defense in order to restore the nuclear parity. Russia managed to avoid the great costs of the arms race.

The Kinzhal system launches supersonic missiles from a MiG-31 aircraft. They fly 10 times faster than the speed of sound. Thanks to their speed and unpredictable trajectory, they are invulnerable against the AA-systems. This missile is unique. The Americans plan to start testing their supersonic weapon only in 2019.

The cruise pods of the Avangard systems are also supersonic. Their speed is 20 times higher than the speed of sound. An intercontinental ballistic rocket lifts them dozens of miles up. Afterward, they plunge down at an enormous speed, avoiding threats like aircraft. It allows them to dodge missiles. Upon entering the atmosphere, the existing ballistic missiles follow a set trajectory and become vulnerable against anti-missile systems.

Sarmat is an ordinary intercontinental ballistic missile that flies much farther than its predecessors. The notorious Topol-M had to follow the shortest trajectory through missile defense. Sarmat could be launched over the North Pole, an area free of missile defense units. It'll still reach its target. The main thing is that Sarmat is heavy capable of carrying up to 20 warheads five times more than the previous generation of missiles.

The Burevestnik cruise missile with a nuclear power unit is truly unique. It's similar to the American Tomahawk. However, Tomahawk's range is 1,500 miles limited by the amount of fuel it can carry. This new cruise missile could fly indefinitely. It can follow any trajectory in order to avoid any missile defense.

Same as Poseidon underwater drones the Russian unmanned submarines. They are launched from a submarine and they pave their way along the seabed fast and stealthy. They swim so deep that no equipment could track them. Even if they do get tracked, their immense speed would save them from being intercepted.

The combination of the new arms can neutralize all existing missile defense systems. KInzhal will destroy the land-based units. Poseidon will take care of the sea-based ones. Then, Sarmat, Avangard, and Burevestnik will take off, dodging any remaining obstacles on the way to their target.

Moreover, we have the Peresvet combat laser systems. They are unique because they are capable of instantly hitting their target and have unlimited ammunition supply. They increase Russia's defensive capabilities by a great deal.

Russia has already adopted all of these new arms systems. It's not a warmongering step, but the regeneration of nuclear parity. If the sides of a possible armed conflict understand that the counterstrike will destroy everything, nobody will start a war. It means it's time to stop waving fists and start negotiating again.

Vladimir Putin: "I believe that we've approached a milestone when we must reconsider the very architecture of global security. We must seek a rational balance between the interests of all international players." Maybe now our plea for balance and equality of all players will be heard?

"Nobody listened to us. Listen up now".
