Meaningful Gestures or Meaningless Hashtags? The Russian Approach to Women vs the American One

For March 8th, building facades on New Arbat were turned into greeting cards. The images flow from one house to another, moving horizontally and vertically. For three days, almost one hundred buildings will have such works of luminism throughout Moscow.

They wished women a happy Spring Day in New York's Times Square. Passersby received fresh flowers, which were a bright contrast to the sudden snowfall that covered the city. This is the second time they did this in New York, and it surprised American women since Americans think of International Women's Day as a day of protesting for equal rights.

 

On the West Coast, the weather resembles spring. Seattle men went to an event wearing t-shirts with the hashtag “GiveHerASmile”. It united young men, who wished to give women warm greetings via social networks. Young men even handed out tulips to random women.

"We give girls these tulip bouquets with a ribbon of the Russian tricolor. We want to wish all women, girls, moms, and grandmothers a happy Women's Day".
